Not a fair comparison since yours- Siegfried - is a Turbo.
Dave 24 mine is an 86 and identical to yours in every respect. Its less than 120 HP pushing a two ton vehicle so keep that in mind. Define slow? 0-100 kmh in over 12 seconds or passing and acceleration on the highway where it really matters and where the 8 valve does ok in 4th. It does take some work to get up hill though.
What is your top end speed where you dare to go? I rarely push mine past 130 kmh and stay between 100 and 120 for maximum speed and efficiency.
If indeed it is bogging down - you might have a few diagnostic tests done - eg compression, timing and fuel delivery. But for me I just get used to it and frankly now go out of my way to deliberately accelerate slowly to obtain maximum fuel efficiency. If you are getting crummy mileage then that might be a clue. There also a few diagnostic tests - eg fuel enrichment and so on that will help you out. They are all described in Bentley.
The beauty of the CIS is its relative simplicity. But there are few things you can do to improve acceleration without compromising something else eg consumption.
Get a Bentley, take care of that jewel of an engine and live with it.
