I recently had all the rubber components in the clutch line go over a period of about 8 months. The slave went first, then the hose, then finally the master. I had the slave and hose replace by a shop and did the master myself.
AFAIK, replacing the slave requires removal or near removal of the clutch. I wouldn't do it unless I had to.
I rebuilt the master on my 93 900S (180K miles) without removing it. It's the cheapest way to go and not too hard to do if you're willing to spend some time on your back and you have a decent c-clip tool. This is probably the 3rd or 4th hydraulic rebuild I've done (all on difference vehicles and different parts) and I've never had to do one twice.
I suspect the reason they all went was I got the wrong fluid in the system. It hasn't affected the major ABS components but it did affect the clutch hydraulics.
