In my case, the system was flushed when the shop replaced the slave and the hose. It just took a little longer for the master to go. I removed all the fluid from the reservoir, disconnected the piston from the clutch pedal, removed the c-ring, pulled the piston assembly out, replaced the rubber seals and washers. Then put the whole thing back together again.
I had trouble with the c-ring since my c-ring pliers are the 'universal/reversible' kind and I had trouble getting a good grip.
I've never had to do a rebuild twice - I've done a brake master cylinder (Triumph Spitfire), disk brake pistons (2) (Pontiac Fiero), and clutch master cylinders (Toyota Celica, Saab 900S). Keep in mind that my 900S is relatively new since it's a 93. If you have an older one, the metal parts may be worn beyond what a rebuild can repair.
