I'll try to describe this the best I can without photos.
First, when you put the top down, be sure that you have closed the locking latches on either side of the front bow. Once the top is down, you need to adjust the top so that the boot can fit snugly. Basically, you need to tuck in the fabric part of the top that lands on the rear seat when you put the top down. With that fabric in the way, you cannot install the boot. I just gently lift the top mechanism with one hand and tuck the fabric in behind the rear seat with my free hand. You want to be sure that you have cleared the area behind and to the side of the rear seat. So that when the boot is installed, you are not pinching any fabric.
Now you can install the boot.
I usually put the drivers-side piece in first. If you look at the underside, you'll see a large black metal retaining clip (for lack of a better term). That clip goes in behind the front seat shoulder strap mount. I usually put that clip against the back of the mount with the rear of the piece at about 2 o'clock. Then I pivot the piece clockwise and slide the rear tab under the rear retaining strip (black piece with all the screws that goes along the upper trunk edge).
Do the same thing with the passenger-side piece, except its 10:00 and you rotate counter-clockwise.
Then take the large center piece and fit it between the two side pieces by fitting the rear tab in the rear retaining strip. You should note that the rear of the center piece has two straps with rubber spools or dowels sewn in them. Those flaps actually get closed in the trunk. You need to open the trunk, put the flaps down and then close the trunk on them. The forward edge should have two black fittings that are like buttons. When the center piece is installed properly, they should be right behind the rear seat headrests. Behind each headrest should be a little rubber strap with a hole in it. You pull the rubber strap up and put the hole on the button-style fitting to hold the front edge down. Note: sometimes the straps get broken, so you may be missing one or both. Additionally, there are two clips on the centerpiece along the edges that overlap the side pieces. You just need to move the pieces around a bit to get the clips aligned, and with a little pressure, snap them in place.
