Justin and everyone, Thanks. It's tempting to think of buying a late model c900 and restoring it ground up, add some low-maintenance upgrades while at it. It is tempting. Still, I'd have a ~15yo car still. By which I mean, for all the DIY love put into my '85, it still would sprout age-issues (electrical probs, rust, squeaks, random bits that were meant to last the "lifetime" of a car). After so many years, am just tired i guess.
The audi, yes the one owner of a 90's vintage audi gave me the same advice: expensive and somewhat increase frequency maintenance. That said, my 2000 A4 has been trouble free and a hell of a car (with sport suspension and v6 anyway). With that in mind, the CPO i'm looking at has lots of warranty, just in case.
Have test driven the 9-3 and 9-5 and of course keep up with them on saabnet boards. I like them, but there are things that just rub me wrong, personally (that maybe others are cool with, so to each his own). But, there's a dealer nearby, i'll swing by for fun and poke around again.
And about the truck, yes, no doubt my ol c900 RARELY ever gave me need for a pickup :-) But, am moving back to the US in the near future, and love to get out in the woods hunting but access mostly unmaintaned, overgrown service roads, especially if it's been wet, that are not conducive to low-sitting, nicely painted cars. Even my old saab, though it's been through a few fields in it's day :-)
