I don't know why the recommended inflation pressures have changed over the years, but they have...my 83' 900 base calls for 27 front, 29 rear. The optimum pressure really depends on several things...such as how much crap you keep in the car, passengers or not, brand & speed rating of the tires, how you drive & how accurate your gauge is(nt). I'm happy running 33 or 34psi all around, depending on the gauge I'm using...I've got many & only perhaps two read the same. I forfeit perfect tread wear (not by much) & the centers start looking a little thin before the shoulders, but I've got three cars (all Saabs) & two motorcycles [vehicle of choice is my bicycle :], so dry rot always necessates early tire replacement anyway. I think 36psi is the minimum he you've got passengers & gear. If I'm towing motorcycles & have the hatch packed w/tools, I'll put 36 in the front & 42 in the rear.
