I am relying on my memory - it was a year ago... but I'm quite certain that's what he claimed, something between 50 and 51mpg. I can double check. Remember, this is different than EPA numbers (which often are low compared to real life), and it was mostly highway. They are also very non-spirited drivers with a fuel economy display in front of them! We had a 2007 car buyers list with real-world non-EPA numbers: Honda Civic was 36/50, 9-5 was 24/39. Those 9-5 numbers seem to jive with saabnet. While I don't think most people would achieve that (certainly not me!!), 50mpg under those conditions might not be unreasonable. Certainly for them it is a more cost effective alternative to Prius (which they considered).
A caveat: I know he went by the display - I don't know how carefully he double checked it against fuel receipts etc (although I think he did). I am willing to trust his math skills (PhD in physics).
The new civic is nicer than civics of old, but still has nothing on a Saab for me...
