Keep in mind that this was on a Sunday and my shop where I could fabricate a real tool was miles away and I think we were going out of town for vacation later that same day. I took a piece of 1/2" plywood and transfered the dimension of the seal to it using a compass. I drilled through the center hole to allow a 8 MM bolt clearence. Then I ROUTED out the material inside the seal area and cut away the area outside of it. I ended up having to remove a little bit of additional material over the nose of the crankshaft which I might have used a spade bit for. Then I took a 1/4" metal plate and drilled another hole through it for the center bolt and used it to back up the plywood because 1/2" plywood wasn't rigid enought. I lubed the seal, put it in postion and then used the plywood plus metal plate sandwich with a bolt through the center to push the seal flush to housing.
Of course the proper way to do this is to take the seal to a machinest and have them make a driver that is the depth of the crankshaft protrusion plus a little. Surely someone on this BB could provide a measurement that would determine the depth. It would be real slick if the machinest would weld a plate on the back with the hole appropriately centered. Then all you would need is the bolt and you are home free.
I have had several seal drivers made. It is not too expensive but you need the dimnensions in advance and buying one ready made could be cheaper. A kind soul lending a little used tool would be worth the shipping.
