area. have an oil change with filter done. Use 10W30 Castrol and a fram filter is good enough. The trans fluid can be change without changing the filter. Its like a bigh metal brillo pad in a metal casing. It barely filters anything. If you trans pan has a drain plug drain it completely add4 quarts put plug back in. rnun a few minutes drain out 4 quarts. Replace plug. Run 3 minutes drain again. repeat this a total of 4 times and you have pretty much removed all the old fluid in the torque converter. Find a local votech or auto tech shop and ask if you can have work done there. Nothing extravagant just the engine oil and filter and type F trans fliud for now. The auto trans has a section that runs a regular 30 weight oil but if I am wrong I am sure to be corrected. Spark plugs rotor cap and rotor are cheap. Get a little help and save a bundle. as for the alternator , if its turning and the battery light is off after starting run it a while. $900 to pump into a "new " car is too much for what you are getting done. with winter coming on check the antifreeze level. One of major issues with the 900 engine is the head gasket, ESPECIALLY ON THE NON TURBOS SEEM TO GO BAD AT ABOUT 120,000 MILES NOW THAT WILL SET YOU BACK ABOUT 120O. cap lock stuck on. Ease into this before you sink a bundle in a car you haven't had a chance to assess the needs of. It literally frustrates me when people get screwed over by mechanics. They try to do that yo me , just when I inquire about the cost to get some thing done. I always nicely laugh in their faces at some of the prtices they want to charge. Not that I would ever choose the NE area of the States to live in , but I sure wish I wa scloser , I'd do this for you; and so will other at least help or give guidance or a lending hand. If the car is drivable change the oil and filter, check the antifreeze, cahnge the type F trans fluid (auto matic yes?) and drive the car a while. If alternator is bad you'll know soon enough. Then get some one to help you and get one from Auto Zone. Thats my take. Wrap it up. And here I am not the expert on this site and some have already signed on to your post, but this is one of the first times I have decided I am right and they are over reaching with your money. Hold onto you $500 service money and the $300 alternator money and wait a week or so after you do fluid changes. I see little harm that could occur saving about $700 that way. On the trans fluid change there is even a better way to change it to get all the fluid out of the torque converter, but its a little more technical and many places just drain out the 4 quarts and replace and thats it. I do not recommend that. Do the 4 drain and adds and you will have re fluid which is waht you want. You could even drive the tranny like it is for a week or two, but the engine oil and tranny fluid is a must do soon. The rest is just not nearly as important. best to you.
