I'm from Massachusetts. The rule you speak of does not stop you from using whatever the laws are in your state. Usually this will work as Massachusetts allows you to go by the law in your state.
For us Massachusetts residents they allow a 7 day temp transfer if we "Lose the ability to drive" our currently registered car. What I think that is supposed to mean is, we can drive a new car for 7 days (or maybe it's 9 days, check with the DMV)if our car is sold, burned, stolen, ect.. It is vague enough that even a blown engine or other serious issue can justify the transfer. In fact, you don't even have to transfer officially, just have your registrations , the new signed title, and some evidence that you don't have your old car. I usually get someone to give me a notarized bill of sale for my current car to carry while driving home (just maybe the deal with my friend doesn't go through for some reason ;) )
I would think that, if you get insurance, and carry the bill of sale, you should be able to use your plates, IF it is legal in Canada. Of course, I really have no idea.
If it was me, I would try and register and insure it ahead of time. Then you would be legal.
