Hi Paul:
I just exported / imported an 88 900 TC I bought privately in Middlebury, driving it up to Montreal on Tuiesday. I made three trips to VT, to see the car and put down a deposit, to pay the balance and go to the DMV and drop off the registration (photocopy) at the border and finally to pick it up. I was going to have it towed on a flatbed to the Peterbilt Service centre near the Champlain border crossing where you can park a car while the 72 hours tick over, then decided I didn't want to risk having my new baby stolen or vandalized and made the third trip to VT to drive the car from Middlebury to the border and on home. The VT DMV doesn't concern itself with the transfer of vehicle more than 15 years old so I did not have a transfer sticker - I just taped the vehicle registration to the back window and crossed my fingers (I was tempted to put on a plate from another Saab but I thought that would be a graver sin than flying the registration). The guys at U.S. Customs were pretty cool (it is a car without a pedigree so it could have been problematic) and I had been very careful to make a good looking Bill of Sale with the names, addresses and home phone numbers of both parties in bold type. Oh, I also insured the car before I picked it up. I also photocopied all my documents. Customs is not CopyCentre. On the Canadian side the pedigree issue raised some eyebrows but at the end of the day all they were really interested in was my $500 (and provincial is still to be paid, to say nothing of the time I will have to spend fixing the emergency brake, etc. to get my SAAQ registration). I don't have my plates yet but I figure I can go head to head with the SAAQ, that is to say at this point I think I can say my story has a happy ending. Congratulations by the way. Is this your first? (it's my no. 5). What did you buy?
