good news is your not burning up your auto box, in-fact make sure what fluid is dripping, keep a eye on the fluid levels of the auto box and motor oil, reason i mentioned motor oil is because that back cover your speaking of that's doing all the dripping is in-fact not the problem, although it looks like the gasket is totally blown out and a Nile river has started its not the problem.
now... if one were to look at the top center of that plate (while on the car), there is a 2 inch shelf (sorta speak) on top before reaching the back of the motor block. on that shelf is a bolt or a stud in a horizontal position a inch in. this stud has a washer and then a nut screwed to it when this nut becomes loose motor oil will emerge from the stud and run to the back-side of the plate and drip.
for the bad news... the two inch shelf i stated earlier is not 2 inches everything is much, much, smaller in size. i stated everything was bigger so one can get a better visual on the matter at hand. in fact the bolt, nut, and motor block are so small and with in such close proximity of each other its next to impossible to get a wrench up there and tighten the nut.
this is the source of the problem, as for the burning smell... the fluid that is escaping out of the stud because the nut is loose and is running down the back side of the plate and dripping on the exhaust muffler and burning creating the smell. if you look at the top of the exhaust muffler just under the back plate you will see its black from charring up motor oil that was dripped onto it.
keep an eye on your auto box fluid because the bolts that hold the c-companion flange to the car can drip auto fluid.
