Timing chain tension question (a bit long) Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Tue, 1 Jun 2010 08:56:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Lately, I've been obsessed with noises somewhat resembling lifter noise. The worst of it was solved with a new exhaust manifold gasket, but there's still a sound there at about 2200-2500 rpm; worse when engine is revved hard. In addition to the gasket, I checked the stiffness of all of the lifters (they are all exactly alike, stiff), replaced the chain guide in the valve cover, and bled the lifters per Bentley. I also checked the timing marks and everything lines up perfectly. The teeth on the sprockets and the chain itself look perfect.
Question 1: Am I correct in assuming that, if the timing marks line up perfectly (as they do), this means the tensioner is fine? I am tempted to replace the tensioner simply because it has never been done AFAIK and the car has 185,000 miles on it. Timing chain has only about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch slack when pushed down between the sprockets.
Question 2: Would using a different oil quiet things down? I currently use Mobil One 10W30 with a Mobil One filter. Would going to 20W50 help?
And yes, I know I should take the belts off and make sure the sure the sound is not coming from the AC compressor, water pump or power setting pump. But, I'm due for an oil change (put some Sea Foam green in a bout 500 miles ago to clean things out), and the power steering pump and water pump only have about 40K and 20K on them, respectively. AC compressor is the original unit, now running R134a. I'll get to that soon (currently in the middle of an R-134a conversion on our 89 Mercedes wagon and I can't stand the idea of touching another AC compressor at the moment).
