Are you certain that you aren't hearing the injectors clicking? You can not judge chain stretch by looking at the timing marks. What year is your engine and does it have the '87> tensioner? If you have the '87> style tensioner then you can remove and measure it to determine whether the chain should be replaced. If the gap between the end of the threaded block and the inside of the pressure foot is 11 mm or more the chain should be replaced. If you have the earlier style tensioner then I would recommend you install a new style tensioner and run the engine for a minute then take it out and measure it. You should have a new style tensioner in there whether the chain requires replacing or not.
