It's not mentioned in your post so I'll recommend that you be sure you are checking the ATF when it is fully warmed up. To get an accurate reading from a fully warm unit pull out the stick and wipe it clean, then insert it, wait about 5 seconds, pull it out and read it. You are expecting the end of the stick to dip into a quiet pool of ATF so if there is ATF in various places on the stick something is wrong. If there is no fluid on the tip of the stick then the fluid level is low and the pump may be sucking air. That can cause foaming and make the whole situation worse. One possibility is that the screws you found are the filter securing screws and without them the filter has moved and allowed the pump pick-up tube to become dislodged. That allows the pump to suck air and foam the ATF. When that happens you'll get crazy fluid level readings and poor performance. What do these screws look like?
