Darryl,
A fuel pressure regulator with a torn diaphragm will feed raw gas into the intake manifold and the over-rich mixture causes performance problems and black smoke. Bad air mass meters usually cause undulating idle as the LH brain tries to compensate or can produce a "limp-home" condition. You are not describing a car with a bad AMM, FPR or O2 sensor. Dave and I are thinking the same thing: You have a blown head gasket, the white smoke is the tell-tale. The cat probably overheated due to oil or raw gas getting into it. What's going on with the cooling system, any oil in the coolant, any coolant in the engine oil? Lack of those clues isn't conclusive but presence of them generally is. Does there appear to be pressure in the cooling system right after the car is started (long before the coolant gets warm)? Does there seem to be a lot of water emanating from the tailpipe? With really badly blown head gaskets coolant (water) in the exhaust system will turn to steam but then condense before exiting the tailpipe. If you can create the "no start" condition and quickly pull the plugs look for the presence of anti-freeze or raw gasoline on the plugs or in the cylinder. A flooded (with gasoline) cylinder isn't typical of a blown head gasket but we need to keep an open mind as we proceed. As mentioned, the condition of the plugs tells us a lot too. If you are lucky a new head gasket will solve the problem. Worst case scenario is that the head got hot enough to become warped. Oh yeah, your car will not provide fault codes, you have to solve these problems the old fashioned way.
