89's are known for main ecu maladies. Cmyles is right though......determine white or black smoke (the former could also be coolant...& a blown HG), verify spark, inspect pcv ck valve. The NTC sensor might be shot as well - I've had bad luck trying to diagnose those buggers, cheap enough to just replace it ($12 for a good quality Febi Bilstein). OR your car is afflicted w/all the above. Lack of reg maintenance &/or ignoring warning signs can result in a lot of issues suddenly rearing up to bite you at once.

Start by inspecting/cleaning (or replacing) your plugs...they will reveal much (make note of any one plug that's different from the rest).

Next, w/the idle soaring, rattataptap the body of the IAC valve w/something sturdy like a the handle of a screwdriver or pliers. If it settles down, clean/lube the IAC valve (carb cleaner followed by your lube de-jour). If the idle remains high, disconnect the IAC valve harness (this will require your foot on the throttle to maintain idle until warmed up). You may have to pull & block (wine btl cork) the hoses to it if the IAC valve won't stay closed. I've gotten away w/just pulling/blocking the upper hose, which allows the valve shutter to be closed manually (finger/screwdriver/stick) if necc & monitored for movement. If cleaning up the IAC helped a little, but bypassing it helped a lot.....replace the NTC sensor, put it all back together & hope for the best.

I don't know what to say about the potential of a bad AMM &/or ECU........other than get known good replacements. An ECU from other compatible years might be a better bet than the problem prone 89' vintage. What years are compatible I do not know. Hopefully someone will chime in, otherwise do some searching.

Pull the plugs first.
