Here's why mechanics want history Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Fri, 18 Jun 2010 07:51:37 In Reply to: High Idle, Hard Starting-help PLEASE!, Darryl Strong, Thu, 17 Jun 2010 13:36:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Darryl,
You may have a bad air mass meter or fuel pressure regulator. How would that cause it to blow white smoke (burn oil)? Also, your symptoms aren't entirely consistent with either of those items being bad.
Did the problems only start after you changed all the vacuum hoses? Did it have these problems, any or all of them, before that? How many miles are on the car? Did you just acquire the car with these problems? Has any other work been done to the car lately? Any other work done just before the problems began? Did any or all of the symptoms develop gradually or just start all of a sudden? Is it really "White" smoke that it's blowing or could it be black smoke? White smoke is burning oil and black smoke results from an overly rich fuel mixture so smoke color can tell two very different stories about what's wrong with your car. Knowing that kind of stuff really, really helps in these situations.
Beyond that the first steps are to create the conditions under which the car will not start and then begin the standard algorithm: Is it lacking spark or fuel or is it flooded (usually a fuel delivery problem that prevents the plugs from firing)? Once you cross that bridge then you work through the affected system systematically and lots of guys here can lead you through that but without knowing the history of the car (if it's known to you) and history or progression of it's symptoms it's a very tedious task to diagnose the problem and may lead you up many blind and frustrating alleys. I don't mean to be an a**hole but this is kind of like a stranger running up to you on a city street and screaming "Hey, where's my car?". Please give us more background and I'll bet we can get your car straightened out.
