Did this recently too. Followed the same procedure to remove the ring. Use one little flat screwdriver with a twisting motion to remove some of the tension on each tab and move it up with another screwdriver. Keep doing this one by one for several turns and it will come out easily.
For the clock spring, it is critical that you put it back with the right amount of pre-loading. Start with the pin of the spring on top and make sure it's centered (3 1/2 turns possible to the left and 3 1/2 turns possible to the right). Then put the steering wheel back with the wheels straight. Since the steering wheel goes about 2 1/2 turns each direction, it will never be strained by the spring. Failing to do this will possible break the wire to the airbag.
