While is is true that everything needed to create an "SPG" was available from either the accessories catalog, or the regular parts bin, it would be prohibitively expensive for dealers to "make their own" in most cases. You could probably have gotten the "real thing" cheaper.
If it's a 1988, for the US market, they only came in Edwardian Grey Metallic paint (code 204), with buffalo grey leather seats. Additional things to check for would be the wide wheel-arch moldings (first year for these), the lowered springs (they'll have fewer coils, and be of a thicker gauge than standard, and will have a gold or bronze paint splash identification on them).
In reality, the only sure way to know is to find out the marketing code for the car. THat should be something like "9XYT" where 9 = 900, X is the trim/model, y is the # of doors, and T would be A or M for the trans. All SPGs had manual trans, so that's always an M for SPGs. SPGs were 953M, I think, but I could be way off on that. I used to know that...
As for whether it's a "real" (rolled off the ship as) SPG, or a "Made" SPG, I think that it will matter to the true collector or Saab fan. Maybe the price difference isn't significant yet, but perhaps it will be some day.
Some years ago, I took a Cherry Red '86 900t and did the "SPG" thing to it. Skirts, wheels, grey leather. But I never represented it as, and I never would have represented it as a "real" SPG. First, it's hard to conceal that red paint, but I feel that being honest with potential buyers would have been the better policy. Unfortunately, that 900 got parted out and the hull scrapped due to bad rust in bad places...
But even if it's not a "real" SPG, that doesn't mean the owner shouldn't be proud to own and drive it. Just don't represent it as something it isn't...
(I wonder if the vintage crowd has these discussions...)
