Condition vs pedigree... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 06:02:21 In Reply to: saab snob?, sandy hague, Mon, 15 Nov 2010 17:27:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Condition is certainly very important as to the value of any of these 19- to 25-year-old cars. I always tell people when looking at these cars to ignore that it is an SPG at first. If you wouldn't pay the asking price for a non-SPG in the same condition, why would you for this car, just because it's an SPG? Obviously, this applies more to the un-restored cars than the ones that have been labored over meticulously by their owners.
But for the carefully maintained cars, there should be a premium for the "pedigreed" car over the non-pedigree car. SPGs sold, new, at a premium over non-SPGs. They were a very small subset of all 900 turbos made, only 7,621 over seven model years (US sales figures, not including the MY 1984 "prototypes"), a period where Saab sold over 200,000 cars in the USA alone.
How much of a premium is anyone's guess. Color rarity also enters into it, especially with the red or green SPGs.
For me, were I purchasing one today, I wouldn't see a problem with paying a 5% to 10% premium over a non-SPG of the same year, similar miles, and in the same state. Maybe more, maybe less depending on overall condition.
Please note that I am NOT an appraiser, nor do I play one on TV. Anyone reading this and taking this as "advice" is strictly on their own. I am NOT stating that a "real" SPG SHOULD sell for 5% to 10% over a non-SPG or "made" SPG. Only the buyer and seller can agree on a price for a specific vehicle. Do Not use any statement made by me here as a statement of value, or for insurance purposes of any kind.
