Amazing how an effort at a positive post can be spun Posted by Frank [Email] (#2509) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Frank) on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 16:36:42 In Reply to: Re: I wouldn't crow too loudly, James, Tue, 23 Nov 2010 08:30:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Maybe it's just the lack of "voice" or "tone" in posting to the internet, but I neither meant brag, nor gloat, nor suggest I have any skill in selling a car. Certainly, I'm having a hard time taking No Snaab or James' responses as anything but negative criticism, though. I don't need an education on the value of these cars - I've owned plenty of them over 22 years, even without making a lifestyle of flipping cars for money. There's no denying a well cared for and rare car is going to sell for more money and I think that was No Snaab's point with the follow-up. Not sure how this point could be argued? Rationality has nothing to do with the analysis. You can tell me all day long that a red-box equipped Citron Beige '92 turbo is better, faster, more comfortable and safer than a bone-stock '85 8-valve hatch. But, the simple truth is, there are only a handful of 25+ year-old basic Saabs left that were well cared for over their life and because of the rarity, they're always going to be worth more to a few people.
What I thought owners would be encouraged to hear is (1) that the saabnet still "works," even in a down economy and (2) that people still recognize the value of well cared for cars, whether they be classic 900s or Camrys. And as I said this morning, there's an emotional component to these cars that doesn't exist with others, like Camrys - for all of the reasons most of us on this board like them, whether it be the look, sound or feel of a classic 900.
I have to believe that the value of 900 hatch cars are - and are going to continue - to increase in value in the coming years at a faster rate than any other model. One look at ebay over the last 4 years reveals a lot of convertibles. In my estimation, a 10:1 ratio of good condition convertibles to hatchbacks. I think there's two reasons for this: 1, the convertibles were taken care of better by original owners that had them either as a second (3rd or 4th) car in comparison to the hatchbacks or sedans, or, like modern-day Mini Cooper owners, were fastidious in maintaing them and 2, hatchbacks were used for what they were intended. Really good in winter (i.e. salt), with lots of storage space (i.e. spilled paint, etc). Meaning there aren't many left.
