I'll bet you have about 2 qts. of brake fluid in the booster can that have been sucked through a bad master cyl. seal where the booster can joins. Eventually the booster fills up with brake fluid, the pedal gets very hard,brakes don't work' and the fluid will get sucked into the intake manifold and burn in the cylinders coming out the tailpipe as "white", pungent, exhaust. Pull off the thick booster to manifold hose,stick a plastic straw into the hole in the booster can and see if you can blow bubbles.If so that's where your internal leak is.Suck out the fluid and reconnect hose,try it. If you have normal braking replace the M.cyl. seal or the whole M.C. bil
