Power sunroof cable alignment?

OK been trying all winter in my free time to fix my power sunroof (1990 SPG).
I was pretty convinced it wasn't the plastic gear that was causing the problem but after a few times disassembled and securely connecting the cables I'm not sure.
What would the gear look like if it needed replacing? I took out at the beginning of trouble in November and it looked pretty new to me and the individual cogs (wc?) seemed intact.
The other possibility (although I've read in past posts that this is unlikely) seems to be the cable alignment.
It always gets to a certain point and then stops. Doesn't sound so much like slipping but rather like the cable has reached its end. Possibly one cable is misaligned? Would that be fixable without removing the headliner?
I hope I'm accurately describing the problem cause (in case you couldn't already tell) I'm a complete amateur.
Thanks for any thoughts.
