yeah, that has been our strategy: c900s for the city (diy + indy maintenance) + rentals for long trips (our insurance covers rentals for a tiny increase in annual premium). It's like a new car lease but only when we need it + saves a fortune. Problem is we normally are transporting a bunch of bikes + gear on the trips + rental companies are not great at supplying the sort of vehicle I need for that (though my thule parts collection is impressive!)... It's hard to beat a Saab for eating up highway miles... I'm always happy to get back in our cars after a rental... hence my interest in a Saab "touring car"...
the 1989 is the extra car, but we've ended up making it the only car in winter. we maintain our cars pretty well + it's been pretty reliable but I won't go more than about an hour from home with it + the kids just in case of (autobox) disaster... I did drive it halfway across the country a year and a half ago though, no problems!
I guess I'll just go for it + look at it as 2 cars, insurance for 2 cars, and triple registrations... I really want to get the most life out of that 1989 + in a sense, using it for the shortish trip commuting takes the load off the newer car so it should last longer (mostly highway miles)... it certainly is handy to have a spare car when doing diy work! N+1... I guess that's where we are headed...
James...
