the amount of rubber hose in the fuel system is very minimal. I have raced a 9000 with E85 in it, researched all of the normal FUD about doing it, read all of the horror stories about city departments using it and causing issues with their fleet vehicles.... and talked to the drag racers that use it as an inexpensive alternative to nitro.
First the Saab c900 and 9000 both use "nylon" fuel lines from the pump in the tank to the metal fuel rail where the injectors reside. Secondly, I am told by my buddy and the people that use it allot, that the real issue is that it is caustic to metal. so before putting the dragsters away (running straight E85) they run it dry and then put some pump regular in it. Third, I have raced a 9000T in several races and my and the team owners experiences are as follows: 1) no fuel issues at all, 2) fuel economy is about 60-70% of unleaded, 3) the engine runs much cooler, 4) they use a short exhaust pipe routed at a 45 out behind the passenger door and water drips from it at idle, 5) horsepower is increased, 6) uses the -531 injectors from a 1994 and later 9000T (this car is a 1992) stock fuel pump, 7) engine has oiling issues and has thrown the number 4 piston twice near the end of the 2nd day (replaced with new used short block each time) but has finished a couple of times too. investigating repeated oil pickup starvation on extended hi G corners as the problem, 8) did I mention no problems with the fuel system? Same car for 3 three years, about 5 races with lots of sitting around between Lemons Races. Pull it out of the barn, clean it up, and repair anything remaining, and off to the races.
Just Saying...
I asked before about running E85 and I was dismayed at the responses. They fell into one of three groups. 1) using corn to produce E85 is a travesty due to the.... blah blah blah... that was not the question asked. it's there to use now. I am not part of that argument. 2) The mileage and the content of energy in the fuel.... blah blah blah.... 3) I have a buddy that knows a guy that was friends with a guy..... blah blah blah....
We did it, it works, it increases power, it runs cooler, gets worse mileage, is cheaper per gallon, doesn't cause issues in the RACE CAR at all.
would I run it in my daily driver? no.. why? because 1) it's not available everywhere 2) it gets worse mileage (meaning I have to fill up sooner), and 3) there is no upside to doing it in a daily driver.
And my smog guy says... if you are close on your smog test... put 2 gallons of E85 in with all premium and see how your smog test does....
