Oops. Magic smoke escaped from Flivver's ignition. Posted by The Noob Eternal [Email] (#3049) [Profile/Gallery] (more from The Noob Eternal) on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 13:32:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The background: I replaced the key cylinder with a toggle switch and a contact switch (key cylinder broke, but that's another story). Didn't get around to mounting it properly, but it worked... until some electrical tape slipped off and, well, the other night as I flipped the all-power switch the dash lights came on and went off thrice, never to come on again. One of the wires coming off of the power switch was quite hot, and a wisp of Magic Smoke (tm) escaped. There's still plenty of power at the battery, but AFAICT nothing at the ignition switch - though I, um, confess I'm a bit of a tyro with a multimeter.
Fuses all look ok. Could it be a relay? If so, how does one test such things? For that matter, should I measure across some of the contacts under the relay(s), and if so which ones to avoid making things worse? Any other ideas of what to test (and, ideally, how to do so)?
Many thanks...
