Failing emissons with high HC Posted by Steve Schwedland [Email] (#2368) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Steve Schwedland) on Sat, 16 Jul 2011 15:05:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My '88 900TC is failing Colorado emissions with high HC. Here are the results:
HC GPM: 2.37 Limit 2.0 FAIL
CO GPM: 9.9 Limit 20.0 PASS
CO2 GPM: 328.8 No limit (what's the point of this?)
NOx GPM: 3.03 Limit 4.0 PASS
I parked the car last fall for the winter, partly because I was worried that it wouldn't pass emissions. I was starting to get some smoke when taking off from a dead stop. Last week I got the car running again, but I need to get plates and to get plates I need to get the e-test. I have not yet checked for any vacuum leaks, but the car idles right around 900 (the needle point just under the bottom of the "1" on the Tach). A week before the e-test I changed the oil and added some oil treatment. After the oil change I haven't seen any smoke when taking off at all.
My worry is that either the rings or the head gasket are failing and that would be bad. I don't know how many miles are on it, as the odo was broken when I got it. I am assuming that it has close to or more than 200K miles. I can probably swing doing the head gasket, but I don't really want to throw a whole lot of money at this car, it really isn't in that good of shape.
Here are my questions:
What are the most common reasons for high HC?
What tests should I do to check out the head gasket and/or rings?
Are there any tricks that might get me through this test?
Thanks for any and all help.
