I just had an emissions test on my beater 93 with 240K miles. I was concerned about it passing. When I drove in the shop they did a pretest without heating the catalytic converter. The test machine was showing HC readings in the 60-70 range. Then before the test they put the stick on the accelerator and held the engine at 2000rpm for 4 or 5 minutes. Then when they did the test the readings were 3 and 4. That seemed to be a huge drop just by preheating the cat. I'm told you need to hold the engine at 1500-2000 rpm for several minutes just before the test to heat the cat. Fresh gas is also a must.
