The job is pretty simple but I would borrow a torque wrench because if I say to you "snug the bolts down easily, not too tight," and you're a big strong guy and/or don't have a concept of how much to tighten them, then you could end up with a cracked valve cover. Or, if you're a 98-pound weakling, the gasket might leak. (BTW, you can't really gauge how much force to use to tighten the bolts by how much force it takes to loosen them.)
I do not use silicone where the Bentley says to goop up a couple places; I use Loctite 518 because it won't clog up the oil pick-up. 518 is a bit spendy but it's good stuff, and I also use it on all paper gasket surfaces as a "belt-and-suspenders measure" recommended by a Saab tech, or even to replace a paper gasket outright.
Be sure to get the right gasket. Assuming you have a 16V engine, there are two versions (85 to mid-86 and mid-86 on). The early ones are thin and designed to fit the thin channel on their respective covers; the later ones are wider, to fit the later covers' wider channel. Later gaskets won't fit in the early covers' channel. I'm guessing an early gasket in a later cover won't seal properly.
As for brand, don't buy Scantech; buy Elring.
