My clutch slave has been leaking (slowly) for years. I've been busy, distracted & lazy. My son is now old enough to pretty much get into anything he desires & likes to play in the cars. He's inquisitive & observant...so after asking me what EVERY single button/knob/switch (also fuses, relays, fuel injectors, etc) was for, he now slides off the seat to operate the pedals. Mostly the clutch, so he can change gears (reverse lock non-op). Well he found a not so sweet spot in the clutch travel & the thing started leaking badly. I made matters worse by over pressurizing my power bleeder.
The resivour would empty out in 45min. I had use the car/trailer to retrieve motorcycles left in my ex-neighbors yard when we moved last year (saintly neighbors...miss them a lot) in one of those portable sheds (like a metal framed, tarp covered instant garage...only smaller) which was unlikely to fare well with today's 80mph winds. Not enough brake fluid to do another bleed & all the used crap from prev flushes looks nasty...hmmm, what's in that bottle back there? No label, qt oil sized bttl, v mild smell, light/thin/moderately slippery...feels like hydraulic fluid. Decided it was either PS fluid or jack oil. Why not? Wow, easiest clutch bleed ever (driving away in under 5min) & the leak stopped.
So, some questions. What's so special about brake fluid? The std dot 3/4 glycol stuff is hygroscopic & has to be flushed frequently, while the dot 5 silicone fluid isn't recommended for much of anything. What's wrong w/using ps fluid? I'm putting in a new clutch bc obv the slave is toast & have major brake work needed as well (SS braid lines & upgraded calipers), so I'm not concerned about any ill affects resulting from the hydraulic fluid (I think...what else could it be?)...but what problems might there be?
