I consider it foolish to not just replace the thermostat. The gasket is far more reliable than the thermostat is. Like the others have said, check the chain tension before you take it apart, to see if you should be going deeper. I disagree about replacing the tensioner. Worth doing if you do replace the chain i suppose, but it's hardly a failure part. I strongly suggest using gasket cleaner and PLASTIC paint scrapers, or a real gasket scraper, rather than chisels for cleaning the block and head. Its just too easy to do serious damage with hardened steel blades. At the very least, knock the corners off the chisel. White (SOFT) scotch-brite, too. Assembly lube for when you put the cams back together couldn't hurt.
