Usually when people say that a C900 "Won't go into fifth gear" what they are referring to is that they can't find fifth gear (but it's there). This is the result of a very common condition caused by maladjustment or jamming of the spring loaded pin in the bottom of the shift lever that stops the lever from moving to the right beyond the fifth gear gate. When you want to select reverse you lift the ring below the shift knob and that retracts the pin allowing the lever to move farther to the right where the reverse gate is. When the pin gets stuck in the retracted position or is maladjusted it allows the lever to move all the way to the right when you are looking for fifth and you can't hit fifth from there. It's really easy to tell if this is the problem by pushing the lever all the way to the right without lifting the ring and if you can pull it back into reverse then it's just a pin problem, easy fix. In fact you can get fifth gear when you need it by just pushing the lever to the right beyond third but not far enough to get reverse and then pushing it forward while making micro adjustments in the amount it's pushed to the right until it goes forward into fifth. I've driven cars that way for months when I was too lazy to fix the pin. (Now a brief intermission.)
On the other hand transmissions that are really worn out often won't shift into fifth gear. The key here is if the "Low miles" are genuine. A five speed that has had an oil leak for a long time and been run low on oil can be nearly destroyed inside and that could cause a "no fifth" condition and will soon cause a "no transmission" condition as well (big trouble). Fifth gear shift fork is nearly impossible to bend by ham-fisting so that's not really an issue. A split shift coupling is a distinct possible cause of such a problem and an easy fix too. There is ambiguity in the oil leak description. Ask the owner which dipstick has been reading low, the engine or the transmission. If he tells you that the puddle on the garage floor is engine oil that's really no help because the transmission and engine both use engine oil, so ask about the dipstick readings. Most C900 transmission oil leaks are not much hassle to fix but, as I said, if the unit has been driven chronically low on oil then it may be really hurt by now. Turbocharged engines don't like running low or dirty either.
