What year is the car? Is this 5th gear issue a recent development?
If it is a late c900, then it has a dogbone shift coupler. It can get misaligned so that the end of it hits on the steering rack and makes finding the 5th gear gate difficult when it rotates. But usually, if that is the case, you have difficulty getting into reverse as well. It could be a bent shift fork from slamming up into 5th if reverse isn't an issue.
The front seal is not a tranny leak, it's an oil leak. If the transmission (differential actually) is losing fluid, then the dif cover is leaking, or the inner driver shaft seals are leaking. Not a good idea to let either condition go on too long. Shaft seals and dif cover gasket are easier than main seal, which requires some special tools, the ability to work blindly in tight spaces, and loads of patience--just did that job (main seal) yesterday in my son's fraternity parking lot.
