All c900 manuals from beginning to end specified motor oil OR gear oil. Either one is acceptable.
The problem with switching from gear oil to motor oil is that cold gear oil flows even worse than cold motor oil, and motor oil will not wash away gear oil. You can end up with a situation where you have motor oil sloshing around in the gearbox but not actually lubricating parts. That problem gets worse with oil gear oil, which can turn into gooey sludge as it accumulates debris and moisture.
If you are going to change to motor oil, it's important to run some sort of detergent through there for a short time to help wash out the gear oil so the new motor oil can do its job. Maybe some ATF and s short drive would do the job - I have no idea.
I would second the Honda transmission oil in the gearbox. Stuff is wonderful, and the current iteration (2nd or 3rd gen) is superb. It's designed to replace motor oil (Honda used to use motor oil, too) but flows better when cold and does a better job when hot. It's all I use these days after a recommendation from someone else on this board many, many years ago.
