you can swap the water cooled T3 or the TE05-12B for each other. it's a bolt up with the only difference being the waste gate actuator (but that usually is part of the unit so no worries). everything is in the same place and the same thread etc. btw if you have a 1987 w/o the water cooling you can retro-fit to a water cooled by replacing the lower radiator hose, the turbo, and getting the fitting with banjo bolt that screws into the head at the forward bolt on the intake manifold. easy.
you can get your turbo rebuilt for less than the numbers I see, assuming there has not been contact between the impellers and the body. You could tell that right away. Most rebuilders are very hot on getting the oil supply line replaced if the turbo failed to prevent oil caused failure in the future. you can have all kinds of performance things done via a rebuilder. Turbomasters in San Marcos likes the T3 over the TE05-12B, says they are better constructed. His words and he does it for a living... I have a couple of each in my varies cars. there are a couple of site sponsors that do turbos, and I think you can just purchase the center section too, look in the classified and parts section of them.
My thinking would be to check the play in yours to see if it needs rebuilding *before* there is contact. if you are ok now keep your oil changed and monitor for future requirements.
