and i think you are correct to connect the hoses as opposed to blocking them cuz they need to circulate fluid.
my buddy has a super old 84 8v that we had to do that to last week.
the heater valve was the old metal style, and it was all heat, all the time no matter how the dial was set.
honestly, we pretty much perform SAAB experiments on that car to see what we can get away with!
I have heard the old metal valves can be rebuilt and are more reliable than the plastic ones we all have trouble with..
