900s, 99 hatches, and (even worse...) 99 sedans all seem to not like the modern american gas pump. There are a number of techniques to use: rotate the pump handle to 90 degrees or 180 degrees, pull it out some, or simply don't try to fill it at the fastest rate.
It is especially a royal PITA in New Jersey, where the law states that I cannot fill my own car, but any 16 year old dropout can, simply by dint of working at a gas station. Add to that the fairly recent "no-top-off" law.
When I could, I'd hop out and hold the lever on a slow fill, which worked, and the attendants who got b*tchy about it backed off when I told them they could stand in the cold and hold it halfway...
If you're lucky enough to live where you have the freedom to pump your own fuel, simply get used to the procedures above, and if someone complains it's taking too long, just tell them it's a big tank...
