The return line check valve is only there for in the event of a rollover, so that the gas won't run out of your tank if the fuel line is broken somewhere. For long cranking, you'll need to check out the check valve at the delivery line. But one or two seconds of cranking is normal and to be expected. Some cars start with more, some with less. Seems to depend a lot on the individual car, for whatever reason. If it takes like five seconds to start, you may have a check valve problem.
