Synthetics are good down to -35 and below. Non-synthetics gel/sludge.
It makes a huge difference!
I lived in Midwest Canada for many years. I had no issues down to -40C (the same as -40F) with synthetic.
All my fluids were synthetic, so even if I forgot to plug in the block heater I was OK. ALSO, BMW no longer puts block heaters in certain models without a request...The reason?... All synthetic fluids so the cars will start as the oils remain fluid.
