Daunting task, but not impossible. To lower it out the bottom, don't remove the motor mounts. You will want to support the front of the engine somehow, as the front motor mount is accomplished using the transmission.
Make sure to remove the input shaft from the clutch; pop the round cover off the front upper portion of the tranny, unscrew the plastic X shaped plug, thread in a bolt, and using a prybar, pop the input shaft foward toward the radiator.
You may get hung up on the clutch / slave cyl setup, or you may avoid it. Make sure to get ALL the bolts around that attach the tranny to the block. There is a nut / stud setup on the front timing cover; don't forget that one.
