If I were you I'd put that money towards purchase of another car. $2500 can get you something that rolls, at least for a while. I have owned 2 '93 C900S with autoboxes and both failed-- one at ~93k miles, the other at ~220k. Because I bought each as used cars (the former with ~87k mi, the latter with ~200k and a bad head gasket) I cannot speak to transmission service records of the cars that have come my way but I'm 0 for two and would be hard-pressed to imagine a scenario in which I might take a flyer on another.

Except for one scenario: in which one might ditch the auto and swap in a stick. The operation is not for the faint of heart but man is it worth it, but, realistically, only if you can do the work yourself (and you don't place a value on your time!). Your post suggests that that is not applicable in your case so I suggest that you cut your losses, take what you can get for the "rust-free" chassis and spin the used car roulette wheel again. I'll bet you a dinner that your $2500 investment now to do HG will be matched with a comparable investment to replace the automatic transmission sometime sooner rather than later-- and in the meantime you'll have to drive the car with engine rpms at 3100k for road speed versus ~2400k if equipped with the manual transmission.

It's just my two cents, but I say ditch it. It pains me to say that and I hope that it will end up in the hands of someone able to do by themselves what needs to be done to keep her on the road but if you aren't that person-- and since you asked-- I say cut your losses.
