Thanks everyone for your ideas so far. FYI - I checked the CPS sensor wire, which I believe has the disconnect plug just forward of the oil filter. Wiggling had no effect on the idle and the connector is nice and clean.
The newest development is that the cursed Vancouver rain finally let up yesterday afternoon. I got in my car to leave work and by then is was mostly clear and dry roads. BAM - my car was running almost normal again!! I know some of you will comment on humidity effects, BUT even after the rain went away the humidity has hovered around 90%. In any case I can remember that on the days when I switched dizzy caps, or installed the Bougicords the weather was clearing after a wet morning.
So looking into rain drivability issues, other DIY-ers say that they have coil problems that come and go with the rain. Similar issues related to iffy sensor connections (o2, MAF, intake, etc.). I did a misting test - sprayed water mist on all connectors, injectors, coil, plug wires, dizzy, intake horn, etc. while the engine was running. Unfortunately there was no obvious change in idle when I spray the components (I sprayed a LOT). Not sure what to do next but I'll pay close attention when the rain comes back.
Anyone know why this happens?
