Fuel Pump relay mystery Posted by Bill S [Email] (#1209) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill S) on Thu, 28 Mar 2013 22:45:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had occasion to pull the fuel pump relay out of my '87 SPG the other day, and was surprised to discover it's a 4 pin relay in a 5 pin socket. The 4 pin relays have one set of switched contacts, and the 5 pins have two. This relay has been in the car since I got it.
Bentley shows that it should be a 5 pin relay with one set of contacts supplying voltage to the AIC valve, injectors, and O2 sensor heater, with the other set of contacts supplying the fuel pumps. If the wiring diagram is to be believed, my fuel pumps (connected to pin 87b in the socket, where the non-existent pin is) should not get power, but of course the car runs fine.
I opened the fuse/relay panel and it doesn't look like anyone has done anything to the wiring underneath (like connect pins 87 and 87b together). I believe my '85 T (also LH2.2) had a 5 pin relay in the fuel pump position, which is what the diagram shows (fuel pump relay circuit is essentially the same).
Has anyone else come across this, or know anything about it?
