It's only a ratcheting mechanism inside working on friction so you can pull it out and push it in.
The two lock barbs get brittle with age and even on the genuine ones, you have to be careful.
If I'm under there doing some work I usually take a needle nose plier and press the tabs together very carefully and let the switch hang loose while rummaging around, that way when you are done you can pull the trigger out, press down the brake pedal, insert the switch and let the pedal self adjust the trigger on its way up.
The genuine switch have a much better electric design with a spring loaded teeter totter switch instead of the after market slide contact that usually melts down too quickly in our stop and go traffic here.
That's why you hear a click on the genuine when engaging.
The 87 and older had a different switch with lock nut which worked by slide contacts but still, the genuine was much sturdier than the after market ones that melted prematurely.
