About the only way you'll locate a new OEM heater valve is to find a dealer that went out of the SAAB business, now sells something else, but still keeps old stock in a trailer out back out of sentimentality.
For the repair, I did the pick-n-pull thing to get an OEM leaker and repaired that before I took the knee bolster off to install it.
I know that it can be replaced through the driver's side speaker opening but I know that I'd drop something, break something, or end up putting yet another crack in the dash .... and I'd still end up taking the knee bolster off to do it. Going in directly from the bottom eliminates a few steps and loads of blue language (keeping me in better stead with my neighbors), not to mention keeping a lot of my blood on the inside and skin on the outside.
Taking the knee bolster off also lets me repair and replace other things that have gone awry. When I took it off to replace the brake booster last week, the car got a low-mileage turn signal lever and an adjustment to the shifter.
Next time it comes off, the front carpet gets replaced and a rust hole in the floor (that developed from a leaky rubber seal around the RHD steering shaft plug) gets repaired.
