Hello

I've read everyone's posts about #8 primaries, but, I actually don't understand the math involved and the choices of dropping them into different cases and transmissions. Now I have a set of #8 primaries and need to drop them into transmission as a replacement for a failed transmission.

I am the proud second owner of a 1988 Saab 900 Turbo and of course the pinion bearing is shot. Howls and screams. This is the original engine and transmission (GM55602) with 300k. (Yes, the first owner got thru 200k without a howl but I knew it would fail on me sometime... and it did.)
I picked up a used transmission GM45714 and want to drop #8 primaries (that I bought in Germany) into this instead of re-building the current transmission.

1) Is this particular transmission (GM45714) a good set up for #8 primaries?

The original transmission in the car is GM55602 and I was thinking just to trash this one and go with the newer transmission. I have a 900 S with the GM45714 transmission and everything about it is better than the GM55602 in the turbo, except that the 900S is not a turbo. The GM45714 shifts better, smoother, faster and has better high speed rpm ratio with the #7 primaries. I am assuming #8 primaries will make me even happier.

2)Is there an optimal transmission to drop the #8 primaries into rather than these two mentioned above? If so, what is the specific manual transmission model number?

3) Last, if you were rebuilding either of these transmission and dropping in the #8 primaries, what particular parts would you replace considering the torque generated by this setup? Minimally I will get new IWIS chains and new pinion bearings.

This car is not for track use. It is used to go between Minneapolis and Bismarck and Seattle with the cruise at 80 mph in Minnesota and 85-90 in North Dakota; Montana apparently doesn't have highway patrol that cares how fast I drive. I am looking for high speed cruising 5th gear fuel economy which the current transmission does not have; it is pegged at 3100 rpm generally at 80 mph.

I am looking for the set up with the lowest practical 5th gear rpm. Yeah, I've read these nasty comments about not being able to park in 1st, etc, etc, but, out here, we drive our cars to Egypt and back, not to CVS and Walmart. I don't care about any other aspect other than high speed cruising.

thanks
Marko
