Yeah, that was kindof a weird one. It was on the '90 SPG with ABS. When backing up (especially when changing direction from back to front or hard turn onto a road in reverse when backing out of a driveway), it would clunk. I replaced control arm bushings and checked all the mounting nuts and bolts, replaced right side inner driver, and replaced entire CV axle, and there was no change. Turned out that someone clued me into a common issue with worn wheel bearing housings that required a special shim. Apparently even just replacing the wheel bearing will not solve it without the shim. I ended up with a super clean '90 SPG parts car, so I just swapped hubs to see if it would change and it solved it. Can't remember if temperature had anything to do with it. I don't think so, but I remember noticing it most in cold weather. Below I have added the link to the solution.
Also to note - I swapped in an '86 front brake setup on my '80 to add vented rotors. I used remanned calipers. The older calipers have a flat plate section that slide back and forth as the brakes are pressed. From the factory they came flush with the housing that they slide on, but remanns usually have some space ground out to allow them to slide more freely. I believe this also causes a large clunk when braking in reverse (I am suffering with it right now in the '80, but it is worth it to have the much better vented brakes). If your clunk is in an 87 or earlier, then I would suggest that the calipers may be at fault.
PS- Dave is right, definitely check your control arms for cracks. While you are down there, check all of your nuts and bolts to make sure that they are tight. First things first. ;)
