that behaviour is not normal "from the factory"... ie it definitely gets worse over time. I would have thought a rebuild (like Steven's) would not do that. He might have a different issue with somewhat similar sounding symptoms?
On some level, I do like the 3 speed autoboxes in these cars compared to many modern automatic transmissions (especially those in Asian cars). Sure it's weak and only has 3 gears (and lousy highway fuel economy), but the gearing is not bad and the range of the shift points when the darn thing is working is quite phenomenal... though not advisable to do often (if transmission longevity is a concern), one can make it downshift to second on the highway with the kick down. Also, I find kick down is pretty much instantaneous and intuitive, whereas even many modern cars will wait and wait to kick down, or do it when you weren't expecting it (and are geared to need to kick down every time you pass on the highway, part of getting good EPA ratings to sell cars)... Wish it was a little tougher and had 4 gears... but whatever, can transplant a stick when it dies!
