Bob -- I pulled a 1981 pump assembly and the upper "cone" was in OK shape. The lower contraption was cracked and pretty much rotted.
You can't use a pump from a late model like the 1993. They don't have enough fuel pressure. You have run a 5 bar pump for that car, however, please post back if it's a normally aspirated or turbo, and that you have CIS injection. That is what makes it necessary for the 5 bar pump.
I'm building a new setup for the 1981 tank with a 5 bar pump, basket type with a pre pump. You have to have the tank out to do that mod. Don't know if you want to go that deep into the repair, but if you want to send me a PM, I can help you with this -- the pumps are still available but you have to rig up the system to get it to work. Hard to write it up in a paragraph.
